Shopify deprecation tracker
Shopify deprecations and deadlines, 2024 to 2027
Shopify retires features on fixed dates, and most of them affect apps, checkout code or tracking that nobody on the merchant side can see. This page lists every platform deadline we track, what stops working, and what replaces it. Last checked against Shopify's developer changelog and help center on September 25, 2026.
The timeline
- 01
October 1, 2024
the REST Admin API became legacy. New features only reach the GraphQL Admin API, and the product and variant REST endpoints are deprecated.
- 02
April 1, 2025
new public apps submitted to the Shopify App Store must use the GraphQL Admin API.
- 03
August 28, 2025
on Shopify Plus, checkout.liquid, Additional scripts and script tags on the Thank you and Order status pages were switched off.
- 04
January 1, 2026
custom apps can no longer be created in the Shopify admin. New custom apps are built in the Dev Dashboard; existing ones keep working.
- 05
February 26, 2026
legacy customer accounts were deprecated: no feature updates or technical support, and not available to stores that weren't already using them.
- 06
April 1, 2026
new public apps must use expiring offline access tokens.
- 07
April 15, 2026
Shopify Scripts could no longer be edited or published.
- 08
June 30, 2026
Shopify Scripts stopped running. Discount, shipping and payment logic needs Shopify Functions.
- 09
July 30, 2026
new themes and theme updates submitted to the Theme Store must include the shopify-account component for customer accounts.
- 10
August 26, 2026
on all other plans, script tags on the Thank you and Order status pages stopped running, and pages that weren't upgraded were upgraded automatically.
- 11
October 1, 2026
apps can no longer create or update script tags on any API version. Existing script tags keep running for now.
- 12
January 1, 2027
every public app must use expiring offline access tokens. Apps still sending non-expiring tokens get authentication errors.
- 13
March 1, 2027
script tags stop running on storefronts. Anything still loaded that way, including old tracking and app widgets, stops working.
- 14
Every quarter
Shopify releases a new API version and supports each one for at least 12 months. Requests to a retired version get the oldest supported version instead.
Who needs to act
Merchants whose ads or analytics depend on code in Additional scripts, a script tag or the theme's checkout pages.
Plus stores that still had discount, shipping or payment logic in Shopify Scripts.
Stores with apps that add widgets or tracking through script tags, which is common in older apps.
App developers with public apps on non-expiring offline tokens or on the REST Admin API.
Agencies that created custom apps for clients in the Shopify admin, before January 1, 2026.
Stores whose theme or apps still use legacy customer accounts.

Platform deadline audit
A fixed-scope review for stores and app teams that want to know which of these deadlines affect them, before something stops working.
What we check
- Script tags and theme code injected by apps, old and current
- Tracking on the storefront, checkout and Thank you page, and where each tag runs
- Custom apps: where they were created, their API versions and token types
- Integrations still calling the REST Admin API
- Customer accounts and the theme's account templates
What you get
- A list of every affected item with its deadline
- What replaces each one, and the order to do the work in
- A fixed quote for the fixes, if you want us to do them
Fixed price, quoted after a first look at the store.
How this tracker is maintained
We only list dates Shopify has published.
- 01
Every date comes from the Shopify developer changelog, shopify.dev or the Shopify Help Center
- 02
Dates are rechecked whenever Shopify publishes a change, and at least once a month
- 03
Each deadline links to a guide that explains the fix in detail, listed below
- 04

How the audit works
- 01
Access
You send a collaborator request code, and we request read-only permissions for the areas we need to check.
- 02
Review
We go through the theme, apps, tracking and integrations against every deadline on this page.
- 03
Report
You get the list of affected items, what replaces each one and the order to fix them.
- 04
Fix
If you want, we quote a fixed price for the changes and remove our access when the work is done.

Shopify deprecation questions
Shopify Scripts could no longer be edited or published from April 15, 2026, and they stopped running on June 30, 2026. Discount, shipping and payment logic now needs Shopify Functions.
Existing script tags still run on storefronts for now, but apps can't create or update them from October 1, 2026, and they stop running on March 1, 2027. Script tags on the Thank you and Order status pages already stopped in 2025 on Plus and on August 26, 2026 on other plans.
Two so far: from January 1, 2027 every public app must use expiring offline access tokens, and on March 1, 2027 script tags stop running on storefronts. Shopify also retires an API version every quarter.
Not by a single date yet. It has been legacy since October 1, 2024, new public apps must use GraphQL since April 1, 2025, and new features only reach GraphQL, so moving on your own schedule costs less than moving against a deadline.
Yes. Custom apps created in the admin before January 1, 2026 keep working and can still be managed there. New custom apps are built in the Dev Dashboard.
Check your theme and apps for script tags, your tracking setup on the checkout and Thank you pages, how your custom apps were created and which API they call. A deadline audit covers all of these in one pass.
