Short answer: yes, but not the way you could a few years ago. Editing checkout.liquid is no longer supported for the Information, Shipping and Payment steps, and the last script-based customizations on the Thank you and Order status pages were switched off in 2025 (Shopify Plus) and 2026 (all other plans). Checkout is now customized through the checkout and accounts editor, apps with checkout UI extensions, Shopify Functions and pixels. What you can do depends heavily on your plan.
What every plan can customize (Basic and higher)
- Branding. In the checkout and accounts editor you can add your logo, a background colour or image, and change the colours and fonts on the checkout, Thank you and Order status pages.
- Content on the Thank you and Order status pages. Apps can add blocks here on every plan: surveys, messages, product recommendations, delivery information. Shopify's own Checkout Blocks app lets non-Plus stores add static and dynamic content blocks to these two pages.
- Discount, delivery and payment rules from App Store apps. Public apps built on Shopify Functions work on any plan, so a store on Basic can still hide a payment method, rename a shipping rate or run tiered discounts, as long as it uses an App Store app.
- Post-purchase offers. Apps can show an upsell or a survey after payment and before the order confirmation. This is available on all plans except Shopify Starter.
- Tracking. Conversion tracking runs through app pixels and custom pixels in Settings > Customer events. See our guide to the August 26 Thank you page upgrade.
What needs Shopify Plus
- Anything inside the Information, Shipping and Payment steps. Apps and blocks that add content or fields to these steps, such as a delivery note, a PO number field, an in-checkout upsell, a trust banner or a gift message, are limited to Plus.
- The Checkout Branding API, for programmatic, more granular styling beyond the editor's settings.
- Your own Functions in a custom app. Custom apps that contain Function APIs only work on Plus stores. On other plans, discount, delivery, payment and validation logic has to come from a public App Store app.
- The full Checkout Blocks feature set: custom fields, custom discounts, hiding or reordering delivery and payment methods, and address validation.

Weighing an upgrade just for checkout? See is Shopify Plus worth it in 2026 for everything else Plus changes.
Shopify Scripts ended on June 30, 2026: what replaced them
Shopify Scripts were the Ruby-based Script Editor customizations that Plus stores used for line item, shipping and payment logic. Shopify stopped allowing edits and new Scripts on April 15, 2026, and all Scripts stopped running on June 30, 2026. If a Plus store still had published Scripts on that date, the discounts, hidden shipping rates or payment rules they controlled simply stopped applying at checkout, with no error shown to the customer.
Each Script type has a Shopify Functions replacement:
| Script type | What it used to do | Shopify Functions replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Line item scripts | Tiered pricing, BOGO, bundles, cart rules | Discount Function API, Cart Transform API, Cart and Checkout Validation API |
| Shipping scripts | Hide, rename or reorder rates, discount shipping | Delivery Customization API, plus a discount Function for shipping discounts |
| Payment scripts | Hide, rename or reorder payment methods | Payment Customization API |
Shopify's Scripts customizations report in the admin lists which old Scripts can be replaced by a public app and which need a custom Function. Public apps built on Functions work on any plan, while custom apps with your own Functions need Plus. If you're rebuilding Scripts logic, our Shopify Functions and checkout extensibility development page explains how we scope it, and the Shopify deprecation tracker lists the other platform deadlines.
"I want to…" — what it takes
- Add my logo, colours and fonts → checkout and accounts editor, any plan.
- Show a message, survey or recommendation on the Thank you page → an app block, any plan.
- Collect a delivery note, PO number or terms checkbox during checkout → Plus (app block or a Checkout Blocks custom field).
- Hide cash on delivery for certain countries or order values → a payment customization app on any plan, or your own Function in a custom app on Plus.
- Offer tiered or volume discounts → a discount app on any plan, or your own discount Function on Plus.
- Upsell after payment → a post-purchase app (all plans except Starter).
- Fix conversion tracking that broke after the upgrade → app pixels or a custom pixel (step-by-step guide).
- Replace old Shopify Scripts logic → Functions: via an App Store app on any plan, or a custom Function on Plus.
When a custom build makes sense
Start with the checkout and accounts editor and App Store apps. They cover most needs, they're maintained by their developers, and many work on every plan. A custom build is worth it when:
- you're on Plus and need logic no app provides, such as company-specific pricing rules, complex eligibility, or validation tied to your ERP data
- you need several checkout apps to behave as one, without stacking app fees and conflicting UI
- the customization depends on your own systems: customer tiers, contract pricing, or stock rules held outside Shopify
For those cases, a custom app with checkout UI extensions and Functions is the supported way to do it. Anything that injects scripts into checkout is not.
Common mistakes
- Buying an app that needs Plus on a non-Plus store. Check whether an app's blocks target the Information, Shipping or Payment steps (Plus only) or the Thank you and Order status pages (all plans).
- Planning a custom Function on a non-Plus store. Custom apps with Functions only run on Plus. Look for a public app instead.
- Assuming old checkout edits carried over. Anything that relied on
checkout.liquidor scripts has to be rebuilt with extensions, Functions or pixels. - Trying to reach checkout with a theme app extension. Theme app extensions only render on the online store, not on checkout or the Order status page. See our theme app extensions guide for what they can do.
